Dr. David Allen

I am a music critic and journalist with almost over a decade of experience covering major events, trends, and personalities in classical music. I write primarily for The New York Times, to which I have contributed reviews, features, obituaries, and other stories since 2014, but I occasionally also publish in Gramophone magazine and with other outlets. One of the hallmarks of my writing for the Times is to root current issues in a sense of the past, a trait that comes from my years of training as an historian. I hold graduate degrees in History from Columbia University and the University of Cambridge, and I have been a lecturer at the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs at Yale University, a fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School, and a fellow at the Security Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. My first book, "Every Citizen a Statesman: The Dream of a Democratic Foreign Policy in the American Century," came out with Harvard University Press in 2023. I was a resident tutor at Leverett House for many years, and it's a joy to be part of the SCR.
