Dr. Amanda Gates Carlson

Merrimack College, Assistant Professor of Accounting

Dr. Amanda Gates Carlson (Leverett '94-95) is an accounting professor at Merrimack College in North Andover, MA. Her research focuses on auditor judgment and decision-making. She has served on several nonprofit boards and their investment/audit committees. Dr. Carlson completed her doctoral studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2023 and earned Masters of Science in Accountancy and MBA degrees with highest honors from Bentley University in 2015 and 2012. She graduated magna cum laude in American History and Literature from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges. Dr. Carlson had a 22-year career as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) prior to pursuing a PhD and second career in academia. She previously worked as an Assurance Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Senior Manager of Accounting Policy at Harvard University, and Controller and Director of Finance for New England Conservatory of Music. Dr. Carlson was a member of the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum, the HRCM Chamber Choir, the Dunster House Opera Society, and Manager of the HSA Campus Store during her time at Harvard. She is still close friends with her Leverett roommates. Dr. Carlson lives in Andover with her husband Michael (Cabot ’92-93), their daughters Maddie (12.5) and Lulu (9.5), and Australian labradoodle Penny.
